In The Garden

Every gardener learns early on to get creative. Alas Mother Nature -bless Her heart- is as much agin' gardners as for them; She encourages our flirtations and modest advances, but if we get fresh -or for no apparent reason at all- She opens up a can of whoop-ass in a blink.

In the vein of botanical desire, are we creative because we garden, or do we garden because we are creative. Do we wag the branch, or the branch wag we?

In one of my garden schemes to catch the Great Dame's eye and perchance snatch a kiss while so distracted, I cultured a bed of native wildflowers. So far so good, but She made out that biting is always a part of Frecnch kissing. Personally I think it's only true of French gardeners who have also made her aquaintance.

Images below of the bed including -but not limited to- Fringecup, Meadow Rue, Star-flowered Solomon's Seal, Pacific Waterleaf, Pacific Bleeding Heart, Yellow Columbine, Siberian Spring-beauty, Arctic Sweet Coltsfoot, Pioneer Violet, Giant Fawn Lily, American Vetch & Western Buttercup. (not all currently in bloom)

What's growing in your garden?

Inspiring Creativity In New Generations

So I intern at International Child Art Foundation (Shameless plug lol) and their basic mission is to inspire creativity within the youth through sponsorship and promotion of creative events and values, with the hopes of creating a more empathetic and creatively thinking society. I think it's a good goal, but I was wondering, considering a micro and not macro scale, what sort of changes we could hope to inspire, creatively... Maybe, what will it look like manifested, what hopes can we have for the youth, what sort of behaviors would be most effective in promoting creativity?

Just generally interested in what ever you have to say on the topic of creativity in younger (or current) generations

Ncycle - Cool Innovation Example

I must say I am amazed at this presentation of the ncycle project. They are attempting to recreate the e-bicycle concept by rethinking what a bike is for, and by merging concepts like a lock, luggage issues, lights, power etc into the frame of the bike.

Really cool! And lots of fabulous imagery, too.

Past Hyposcifo Member Recruiting For Cf.

In my years at Hypo I've come across many creative folk...I'm sure we all have.

Over the years these creative souls have bailed on Hypo for various reasons and likely do not know about this groovy new spinoff. I believe that while Hypo might not be their cup of tea these days CF might be. I also believe that a friendly email to these members might be just the thing to increase our ranks here and draw in a crowd of folks that we enjoyed having around. All the while avoiding drawing in trolls and spammers while increasing content and quality.

What say you?

A Suitable Replacement For Rakarrack?

For years now the only real option for instrument sound manipulation (adding effects in realtime) for Ubuntu has been an extremely finicky program known as Rakarrack. A nifty realtime effects program that when working well is ok (at best) and a nightmare to setup to work at all. Relying on Jack to function Rakarack essentially requires the user to be a super nux geek just to set it up, requiring the user to know the paths of every aspect of their computer's sound system both hard and software. Frequently it does not play well with ALSA if at all....and just as frequently requires to be re-set-up particularly if one updates Ubu. when they become available.

Not being a super or even a true nux-geek I spend more time trying to get both Jack and Rakarrack running than actually using them...sometimes giving up entirely after hours of dinking around.

There has got to be a better way!

Would be nice if there is another program for Debian/Ubu. that performs the same function without all the BS required of the user just to get it to function.

Anybody have tricks for Jack and Rakarrack or better still a program that performs the functions of both without all the setup and re-setup?

How About A Competition!

Seeing as this is a creativity forum and all - how about we kick off 2013 with a competition?

But I need input. Let's throw some ideas around, and let's also invite our friends over at the Science Forums in to participate.

What should be the topic for the compo?

In The Studio

If you have a studio, here's the place to say what goes on in there. "Say! Just what is going on in there?"

Nothing much going on in my studio just now, but it's a grand thing that you would have to see by candle-light while wearing sunglasses to believe. Alas, I don't allow candles in the studio after the last studio fire and I don't allow anyone in the studio without a candle.

I have some stalled works. One is my first use of frame-stretched linen for a tissue-paper collage. I have before used canvas, plywood, and plastic. I made the frame from some scrap and just stretched and stapled the linen on it. I did paint the wood first, thinking maybe it would protect the linen from wood resins...or something. I have some puckering and maybe I should have stretched the linen wet, but as the process of applying the tissue repeatedly wets & drys the fabric I expect the puckering wil disappear in due time.

Anyway, WIPFMSTY. Work In Progress From My Studio To Yours. Subject is a flower scene from a photo and I have barely started the flower center. Lightsource is an orangy twisty fluorescent; not great but I wanted the photo now.

Say! What's going on in your studio?
